How Diatomaceous Earth Works…
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a light fine white powder that consists of crushed up fossils and shells. It works by slicing the exoskeleton of the fleas, dehydrating them and causing death.
You can sprinkle the DE on your carpet and flooring, in the corners or cracks, or anywhere else that fleas may hide. After letting it sit for awhile, you simply vacuum it up. The fleas crawl through the DE powder and carry it to the other fleas. Any flea that comes into contact with it will die.
Depending on the type of carpet you have, you may want to work the DE down into the carpet a bit before vacuuming. You want to make sure the fleas will come into contact with the powder.

Diatomaceous Earth Benefits

Diatomaceous Earth is a non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. Diatomaceous Earth is deadly to any insect yet completely harmless to animals.
Diatomaceous Earth’s mode of action for insect and parasite control is strictly mechanical. The microscopically sharp edges contact the insect or parasite, and pierce their protective coating, so they soon dehydrate and die. The larvae is affected in the same way.
Follow the steps below for step-by-step instructions on giving Diatomaceous Earth to your animals.
For internal parasites (round worms, tape worms and whip worms) you mix it with food. Simply sprinkle it on the dog’s feed.
Diatomaceous earth helps eliminate worms, but you must make sure to use only food grade DE for your dog. Pool grade DE is potentially toxic for the dog so check the labels.
This remedy will reduce the number of worms, but you’ll need to find a different solution if your dog has tapeworms.

Dosage Instructions
There is no wrong way to apply diatomaceous earth. It just needs to be put in the right place and it will work.
Amount of DE to Put in Pet’s Food
Simply feed DE to your cat, dog, horse or cattle once every 24 hours along with their feed. Keep in mind the ratio is 2% compared with the rest of the feed.
Daily Dosage for Diatomaceous Earth
- Kittens – ¼ tsp per cup of feed
- Cats: ½ tsp per cup of feed
- Small Dogs – ½ tsp per cup of feed
- Medium Dogs (under 50 lbs) – 1tsp per cup of feed
- Large Dogs (50 to 100 lbs) – 1tbs per cup of feed
Large Farm Animals
- Horse and cattle: 2 lbs/100 lbs of feed
- Bison and elk: 2 lbs/100 lbs of feed

Diatomaceous Earth for Humans
Human Health Benefits – Start with a dosage of 1 teaspoon daily. and work your way up to 1 to 3 Heaping Tablespoons per day. If you feel that you are very toxic or you have any flu-like symptoms from taking DE, you may be detoxifying too quickly and you should reduce your dosage to 1/2 teaspoon and gradually work your way up.
Some people prefer to take it in a glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning, well before breakfast, to allow DE time to move through and absorb toxins from the digestive tract without interfering or absorbing nutrients from foods or liquids. Some mix it in juice, smoothies, oatmeal or other foods.
- Parasites: DE helps eliminate all intestinal parasites and worms from the body. If you suspect that you have parasites, it is advisable to take digestive enzymes on an empty stomach several times a day to breakdown dead parasites. Bed Bugs: Sprinkle DE on the mattress especially in the creases and on all the bedding. Bed bugs cannot fly, so surround the legs of the bed with DE so the bugs are killed before they can get on the bed. Keep the bed away from the wall and there is no bedding touching the floor. Dust DE in the carpets and in the corners of the room. Remove electrical outlets and puff some DE inside walls. Keep this routine up for several days until the bed bugs are gone.
Garden and Tree Insecticide: Apply to soil and on both sides of plant leaves. DE will kill beneficial insects as well, so don’t put it on your flowers where honey bees go and use it wisely. Food Grade DE will not kill earthworms if applied to the top of the soil, allowing the worms to work it into the soil as opposed to smothering the soil and the worms with large doses. Mix 1 cup of DE with 1/2 gallon of water and spray on tree trunks to avoid ant or other pest infestation of trees.
Organic Pest Control: Dust DE anywhere you have an insect problem. The pest pistol duster is useful to get it inside walls, either under the base boards or my removing electrical outlet covers and dusting it inside walls. For pests that have larvae and eggs, you will need to reapply several times. You can also apply a 2 inch barrier around your home to prevent pests from coming in. If you are building a home or remodeling, dust DE inside the walls to prevent bugs in the future.
Grain Storage and protection: Suggested use is 1 cup of Food Grade DE will protect 50 lbs of grain from insects. A study done by ACRES, USA, Inc. reported that after 12 months of storage, material treated with Food Grade DE had 15 insects, compared to 4,884 with malathion and 16,994 for untreated grain.
Cautions:
Do NOT get DE in your eyes. DE is a drying agent and will dry out the eyes. If you have asthma or some other lung ailment, either wear a mask of be very careful when using food grade diatomaceous earth.
Do NOT use heavily in carpet, it can cause vacuum cleaner problems.
NEVER USE pool filter grade diatomaceous earth around animals or humans. It can poison or kill them.
Helpful Tips and Warnings:
- Only add Diatomaceous Earth to your pet’s food once per day.
- Make sure it is Food Grade
- Don’t stop once you have started because a build of of dying or dead worms can cause your animals to get sick, use consistently for at least 30 days.
- Because of the properties of DE and how it works, it can irritate some people or dog’s lungs. It should not be inhaled by either you or your dog. So if you are applying it to your dog’s body, be sure that you are careful as it can cause a dust cloud. It may be best to apply outside so that the dust cloud does not happen in your house.
- Also, if you apply too much it may dry the dog’s skin out, so do not apply too much or too often.

Other Uses
Diatomaceous Earth has also been reported in scientific literature to absorb methyl mercury, e-coli, endotoxins, viruses, organophosphate pesticide residues, drug resides, and protein, perhaps even the proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections. Given this, Diatomaceous Earth is very useful as a detox solution, digestive aid and colon cleanser and YES humans get worms too.. if your dog has worms it is possible you do too. This can rid you of that problem.
Diatomaceous Earth Under The Microscope
Water Filter:
DE can be used to filter drinking water and even swimming pools.
Unfortunately, water, whether it’s treated by the city or not, is one of the biggest culprits of introducing unwanted bacteria and viruses into our bodies.
Diatomaceous Earth is a very effective water filter! All you need to do is take a bucket and drape a tight-knitted cloth on top of the bucket, then a cup or two of DE on top of the fabric in a small mound. Slowly pour the questionable water through the DE into the bucket. Not only will you have drinkable water, but you will also have mineral and vitamin enriched water.
I can’t help but look at DE and say to myself, “Wow, Heavenly Father. You’re just full of nice little miracles all over the place.” I mean really, a substance that kills unwanted bugs of all kinds, but is good for humans and cattle! Cool!
Giardiasis epidemics have commonly resulted from contaminated drinking water. The long-term solution to waterborne outbreaks involving municipal water systems requires use of water filtration equipment in the water treatment process. Although most large U.S. cities use proper filtration methods, many towns and small cities rely solely on chlorination to disinfect drinking water; the amount of chlorine used often does not kill G. lamblia cysts.
How to treat drinking water for the removal of G. lamblia has become an important concern over the last few years as outbreaks of giardiasis have occurred. Designs appropriate for small water systems are particularly needed.
Giardiasis, a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia, is characterized by chronic diarrhea that usually lasts one or more weeks. So, what are the consequences of parasites and other like critters in the human body? Blindness, obesity, anemia, frequent headaches, weakened immune system, irregular bowel movements, depression, stunted growth, autism, and even death (although the benefits are so vast and innumerable that it requires a whole “nother article). That’s just what can happen to humans. Imagine what is taking place inside the animals we love or are trying to raise.
