For large and giant breed puppies it’s also been suggested 4 drops – every 1 hour instead of every 2 hours for the first 12 hours and then every 2 to 4 hours.
You may see a response within 10 minutes.
√ Please note: we also give tiny dabs or a finger tips worth of Nutri-Cal after the elixer.

Repeat “elixir” every 20 minutes until the puppy is strong enough to nurse or tube feed the formula adding the sugar water as part of the formula in very small amounts (3 to 5 cc). You should see some progress.
Always contact your veterinarian for advice first.
Hummingbird nectar is another option taken from the DPCA Breeders website. Here’s an excerpt from their post about Fading Puppy’s.
“The first thing to `attack´ with a struggling newborn is to determine if the puppy is weak and sluggish because it has no glucose store. Glucose is the simple sugar that the body uses for fuel … without it EVERYTHING stops!
The puppy gets weak, it stops nursing, it is sleepy and weak, it may whimper and cry or it may just lay there. Eventually, in a matter of hours, it will go into a coma and die. Try the `sugar water´ or get a concentrated glucose product.
Remember, reviving weak or sleepy puppies can usually be accomplished by giving them sugar water! Using milk, formula or another concoction like milk will only cause a delay in revival!
Most puppies that are weak at birth can be given a few droppers full of `sugar water´ which I suggest you make by getting uncolored Hummingbird Nectar and mixing it to make a strong syrup. (3 tablespoons water to 1 tablespoon sugar).
The Hummingbird Nectar is mostly Dextrose which blends instantly and is closer in makeup to Glucose than Sucrose which is table Sugar.
GLUCOSE is the SUGAR the body uses directly for energy….FUEL! The closer that the sugar is in composition to glucose the quicker it can be used or there are commercial glucose products in a paste or a gel that you can get … but the point is to get the glucose into the puppy fast!! Lactose, which is milk sugar, must be broken down by the body to use directly … that’s why we use glucose or dextrose!
When a puppy is hypoglycemic (low sugar), this can mimic MANY problems. This is when the blood sugar level drops to a level where you see the puppy not being able to nurse, falling off the nipple, sucking a few `sucks´ and then letting go. Often they are so lacking in circulating glucose that they look and act sick.
TRY THIS FIRST WHENEVER YOU HAVE LETHARGIC PUPPIES.
The dextrose solution goes immediately into the puppies´ bloodstream … it should be stronger within 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat giving the sugar every 20 minutes until the puppy is strong enough or tube feed the formula adding the sugar water as part of the formula in very small amounts (3 to 5 cc). You should see some progress”.

This is a thick formula, so adjust holes in nipples if necessary. It can be tubed. It has 10-12 calories per cc which should allow for good weight gain on your babies.
* One can of evaporated goat’s milk, undiluted (You can substitute evaporated goats milk with goat milk powder or evaporated cow’s milk if you can’t find the goat’s milk.)
* One cup of full fat yogurt (the fattiest and freshest you can find)
* 2 raw egg yolks (don’t worry about the raw eggs)
* 1/3 cup of freshly made, strong liver broth made from boiling a piece of liver in one cup of water and then reducing the water to 1/3. You can substitute fresh beef broth if you just can’t tolerate the smell of liver, but the liver is much better. Don’t eliminate the broth.
* 1 Tablespoon of Virgin Olive Oil (you can use mayonnaise if you like, but remember it is acid based). Use 2 tablespoons to make this formula for kitties.
* 1 teaspoon of karo or corn syrup.
* 1 dropper full of baby vitamin drops (or puppy vitamin drops) *that doesn’t contain iron, there is plenty in the Liver.
Place it all in a blender, blend then pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, store the cubes in plastic freezer bags and take out how many you need for a feeding; thaw and warm to about 100 degrees. If you’re going to use this for bottle feeding or the sponge feeding technique, you may need to thin it out with a little bit of pedialyte.
This formula can keep in your fridge for 7 days. It’s good in the freezer for a full year.
The advantage of this formula is that it’s been formulated to contain 3-4 times the calorie content of canine breast milk.
Mother’s milk has 3-4 calories per cc. This formula has 10-12 calories per cc. The reason for using the evaporated milk without diluting is to get extra calories, same with the full fat yogurt and the olive oil. It is all about calories.
Your puppy will gain weight on this formula beginning about 48 hours after beginning to feed the formula.
Feed the puppy 1 cc of formula for every ounce of body weight every 3-4 hours or when crying from hunger. (1 mL is the same as 1 cc).
*Self-regulated bottle feeders may eat more at every feeding and want to eat less often. This is fine too.
Commercial formulas try to match the caloric intake of canine breast milk, but we’re unable to match the amount of time a puppy actually spends nursing from its mother… unless we’re tubing/bottle feeding about 18 hours a day. So, the best way to insure that a hand fed puppy gains weight we have to increase their caloric intake.
The liver water also adds important amino acids puppies need for growth as well as eyesight.
This formula will stabilize blood sugar nicely and works little miracles for the GI system. Most breeders will see soft formed stool but no diarrhea after a few feedings, if you see diarrhea reduce the dosage. You can use it on all ages of puppies from immediately after birth to old age.

One good way to make a hole… is by heating a safety pin and then making two small holes in the tip of the nipple.
This will usually make holes big enough to allow the proper amount of formula to pass through the nipple without overwhelming the puppy – if you shake the bottle vigorously, only a few drops should escape from the nipple.
WEIGH YOUR PUPPY
When you’re bottle or tube feeding puppies.. its important to have a digital baby scale on hand, to keep track of the puppies daily weight gain or loss.
Healthy puppies may put on up to 15% of their body weight every 24 hours, and you’ll want to know if your puppies are deviating from this norm.

Mix all together and feed as a morning meal in addition to her regular food.
* 1 tbsp Cooked Pureed Pumpkin (Not Pumpkin Pie Filling)
* 2 tbsp Yogurt (Live culture)
* 1 capsule of Slippery Elm (Open the capsule and mix the powder into the meal.)
* 2 tbsp Cottage Cheese
* 1 Hard Boiled Egg.
* I also add 1 tbsp of psyllium husks (or plain unflavoured Metamucil), if things are not firming up the way I like.
Don’t overdo it. Last thing you need is a constipated Dam.
Mix it up with egg beater or blender and let it sit at room temperature for 10 min. to let the junket tablets work. It thickens up slightly but is still quite easily poured.
MANNA PRO GOAT MILK REPLACER
Goats Milk is the closest we’ve got to true canine milk.
Fennel tea has been used by human Moms and dog breeders alike for years to aid in a healthy milk supply.
You can also just buy a Fennel Tea already made..OR another helpful herbal solution for milk supply is Fenugreek seed and you can just buy the supplements (capsules) or the tea as well!
Fenugreek seeds can increase a nursing mother’s milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most dogs can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply.
I’ve read to give about half the recommended dosage for humans to dogs (for large breed dogs) but this can depend on the weight of your dog, so please run this by your veterinarian, especially if you have a smaller breed dog or really before trying any supplement.

Milk thistle is another natural supplement known to help nursing mothers with their milk-making. Other dogs benefit from taking zinc. In small doses, apricot can also increase milk production.
*Whatever you decide to try, it’s always best to run it by your vet before you begin supplementing.
Fennel seed is also has estrogen-like properties, which may explain why the herb has been used for centuries to increase milk production in nursing mothers.. with dogs and humans. Some herbalists have also found that fennel seed helps alleviate urinary incontinence in spayed dogs by acting on hormone imbalances that contribute to the problem.

Oxy Mama by Breeders edge is a postnatal vitamin herb chew that contains Fenugreek, Chaste tree fruit, and Motherwort in a form that quickly brings moms into milk. You can expect increased production within 72 hours.
Use for seven days before birth for females that have had milking issues in the past or before planned C-Sections to bring Mom into milk. Don’t start before 14 days as milking before birth increases their risk of mastitis.

Satin Balls were designed to put weight on a dog very quickly and are loaded with calories. These gained popularity with owners who show dogs but are also helpful with our pregnant and lactating females.
While fast weight gain (and fast weight loss) is not very healthy for the body, some dogs need a calorie boost quickly to push them towards regaining a balance of health.
Satin Balls as traditionally made with grains, but I will provide a grain free recipe for dogs with allergies or sensitivities.
Mix everything together in a big bowl. I recommend putting the dry ingredients first, then the oils, then the egg, then the meat. That way you don’t have to wash your hands in between ingredients
You can form them into balls like the name suggests. I prefer patties though because they are easier to stack in the freezer that way.
How much you put in each serving really depends on your individual dog…
Smaller portion recipe below makes 14 patties… same instructions for both recipes.
A scaled down version of Satin Balls recipe (1/10th or the original).
Combine all of the ingredients, roll into 1-inch balls and feed them raw! Portions can be frozen for future use, as well.
*You can substitute olive oil with flaxseed oil which is high in omega 3s.
I personally like to use Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food mixed with my dogs kibble to keep their weight on while nursing. Also makes a great puppy mush that first couple weeks when puppies are gumming their food.
– Boil water, add sugar (or fructose) and salt. Stir. Let cool.
– Refrigerate what you do not use, but do not keep for more than 48 hours; make a new batch.
It is safe for pets, particularly puppies and rabbits.
– You can freeze this solution into an ice cube tray and put the cubes into zip lock bags for convenience. Then give Mom or pup an ice cube as needed. If they are reluctant to drink they might enjoy a frozen ‘treat’.
This recipe was made available as a result of an FDA Health Alert regarding Xylitol and Aspartame being used in some formulations of commercial Electrolyte replacement products.
Calsorb 12ml Syringe – MUST HAVE ON HAND! Calsorb is a fast absorbing calcium in a gel base for dogs showing signs of extreme calcium deficiency and can save your Mama dogs life in an emergency. Comes in a clear syringe for quick and accurate dosing. Ideal to use during whelping or with fast-growing puppies.
Breeder’s Edge Nuture Mate – Supports immune system and protects the GI tract, Provides energy and promotes aggressive nursing, Rich in colostrum, protein, and other nutrients.
Please read more about using Calcium during and after whelping on the Revival website at Calcium Related in Dogs After Whelping
If you supplement calcium before whelping, you shut down the pregnant dog’s ability to fine tune the minute-by-minute demand needed for whelping and milk production. By staying away from calcium supplements pre-whelping, you can let her regulate and gear up for the needs of whelping and milking. This helps prevent calcium issues in the pregnant dog, such as Eclampsia or Milk Fever.
Post-whelping, all high risk moms and heavy milkers should get calcium supplements until weaning. Healthy Bones is a great option for keeping your Dams calcium levels up throughout the lactation process.
Doc Roy’s®Healthy Bones has two parts calcium to one part phosphorus, which is needed for effective absorption and takes the guess work out of how much calcium to give them, dosage is on the bottle and its double what a non-lacting dog needs.
Giving ONLY calcium will make the problem worse – you must balance 2:1 calcium with phosphorus. This formula also includes Vitamin D to help with absorption and Vitamins A & C to help get the calcium out of the bone. All of these nutrients are good for the nursing dog, and along with the puppy food the nursing mom is on, it will help ease calcium deficiency problems from developing and also long term bone loss in your dams.
Lactating Females: Give 1 tablet per 10 lbs until puppies are weaned
That’s 1900 mg of Calcium a day for a 40lb dog
HEALTHY BONES ON AMAZON PRIME
Vitamin D 200 I.U., Calcium 333 mg, Magnesium 133 mg, Zinc 5 mg
I’ve also used these Nature Made Calcium, Magnesium, D3 and Zinc supplements made for humans for my lactating dams. Definitely more economical but you’ll still need to get the dosage right and then get them to actually take them.. which definitely is not as easy it is with the chewable Healthy Bones tablets but they are also upwards of 3x more expensive.
You need to give a 40 lb dog – 4 chews of the Healthy Bones (1 chew for every 10 lbs) and basically 5 or 6 of these tablets to equal the 1,900 mg of Calcium that Dr Roy’s – Healthy Bones recommends for a 40 lb female.
There are also Calcium supplements that have 1500 mg per tablet. The Healthy Bones just makes everything easier.
